How Do You Measure Success?
Success is a big word in modern times. As a world, we have never had access to so much information, theories and great resources, as we do today. However, instead of making things easier it is quite the contrary for the many. In fact the wealth of information available has raised the standards achievable so we all have to go the extra mile to be more successful. Right? Maybe not.
With the rise of 'The Secret' and the many great speakers who keep the words of ancient philosophers alive we have great wisdom available to all of us. It is what we do with this wisdom that is important. On a commercial level success is graded on hard results, and as we spend the majority of our lives within the corporate environment we are using this system to rank our personal lives. We have access to information that can help, however, we all want success fast so we go straight for whatever is going to get us results today, for free with minimal effort. There could be a problem here.
You see, we all ARE SUCCESSFUL in the areas that we place high value. We only appear unsuccessful when we compare ourselves to somebody else's scale of success. A scale where their values are different and so are their results. What do I mean by this? Well, with the rise of coaching and the related articles, we all have an understanding of what values are and how they are manifested through what we do. (If you don't, I strongly suggest that you research this area of your life or get connected with a coach who will be able to guide you through them.) I guarantee that areas of high value for you will show areas of success in your life, that maybe you didn't previously appreciate. The outer world IS a reflection of what is happening inside. Areas where you feel unsuccessful, will reflect inner values that are down your personal pecking order.
One of the most common markers for success (in the corporate world) is money. If you feel that you are unsuccessful in this area, take time to think about what you consider to be more important than money. You will probably find that whatever it is, you have in your life. So does this mean that our values dictate that we could end up poor, and to get rich we have to change our values. Not necessarily, it simply means that we have to link our goals in with our higher values whatever the goals may be. If we continue with the money example, 'What would having more money mean to your higher values?', 'How would having more money help, with respect to the areas you value the most?'
So next time you feel unsuccessful, realise that you are in fact very successful. Just consider what you value the most as that is where the key to your success is.
